Cité Soleil, Port-au-Princessä sijaitseva slummi oli ehdoton paikka mistä moni muukin haluaisi pakoon: epäinhimmilliset olot olivat suurin syy lähtemiselle - peruspalveluista pystyi vain unelmoimaan, ottaen huomioon rikollisuuden ja väkivallan suuren kasvun, joka teki rauhallisesta arkielämästä mahdotonta, kun jokainen päivä turvattomuuden tunne kasvoi entisestään. 

Toinen syy lähtemiselle oli ehdottomasti mahdollisuus päästä töihin ja oikeasti pystyä elättämään itsensä - puolet viikosta ilman ruokaa ja silloin kun sitä oli saatavilla, siitä ei saanut tarpeeksi energiaa. (1)

Odotukset kaupungista olivat totta kai hyvin suuret, mutta en samaan aikaan oikeastaan tiennyt mitä odottaa, kun kuitenkin koko elämä on eletty vastakkaisissa olosuhteissa. Ensimmäisiä oletuksia kuitenkin oli tietysti, että kaupunki tulisi olemaan huomattavasti paremmassa kunnossa kuin kotislummini, jos siellä kerran on oikeasti mahdollisuus tienata ja elämä tulisi olemaan siellä parempaa. Mielessäni kuitenkin pyöri monia ajatuksia puhtaasta elinympäristöstä, joka päiväisestä ruuasta, puhtaasta vedestä ja kunnon käymälöistä.

Odotukseni eivät olleet mitään verrattuna itse todellisuuteen, kaupunki tuntui olevan kuin toisesta maasta - oikea unelma. 

Matka Pétion-Villeen oli hyvin raskas heikolle fyysiselle kunnolleni, vaikka matkaa olikin vain päälle kymmenisen kilometriä. Vähäinen ruoka ja kunnollisten kenkien puuttuminen toivat entistä enemmän tuskaa jo valmiiksi rankalle matkalle, mutta toiveet ja mielikuvat uudesta elämästä pitivät mieleni avoimena ja antoivat energiaa jaksamisessa.

Kaupungissa liikkuminen vaati totuttelua ja elinolojen erot olivat uskomattomat. Kunnolliset kodit, viemäristöt, joka puolella ei ollutkaan roskaa ja puhtaat käymälät olivat hyvin uusi asia mihin tottua ja miten käyttäytyä: kaupungissa ei ollut enää normaalia tehdä tarpeita muovipussiin tai peseytä likaisella ja minimaalisella vedellä.
Yöpyminen tapahtui ensimmäisinä iltoina syrjäisillä kaduilla ja ruuan hankinta oli hankalaa vähäisillä rahoilla ja eväillä, kun töitä ei ollut vielä löytynyt.
Töiden löytäminen oli hankalaa vähäisen koulunkäyntini vuoksi, mutta onnistuin saamaan siivoustyötä yksityiseltä ja varakkaammalta henkilöltä, kuka suostui tarjoamaan minulle monille vähäistä mutta minulle suurta palkkaa sekä opetusta mitä tehdä ja miten kaikki toimii.

Cité-Soleil is a slum in Port-au-Prince - place where many other people would also like to move out: inhuman conditions were the biggest reason for leaving - you could only dream about basic services, but also taking into consideration crime and violence's fast increase, that made calm normal life impossible when every day your insecure feeling just grew and grew.
Another reason for leaving was certainly a chance to get a job and actually be able to sustain a good life - half of the week without food and when there was food you couldn't get enough energy to survive.

My expectations of the city were, of course, very big, but at the same time I didn't really know what to expect when I had lived my whole life in opposite conditions. The first assumption was, of course, that the city would be in a lot better shape than my home slum if there actually was a chance to earn money and life there would be a lot better. Many thoughts circled around my head of clean habitat, clean water, and actual lavatories.
My expectations were nothing compared to reality, the city felt like it was from a whole different country - a real dream place.

The journey to Pétion-Ville was really burdensome for my weak physical state even though the trip was only a bit over ten kilometers. A small amount of food and no proper shoes caused even more pain to an already hard journey, but my wishes and imaginations of a new life kept my mind open and gave me energy to continue forward.

Moving in the city took some time to get used to and the differences between the city and a slum were incredible. Proper homes, sewer systems, every corner wasn't filled up with rubbish and clean lavatories were big new things to get used to and how to behave: it wasn't normal to do your needs to a plastic bag or wash yourself with dirty and little water.
The first nights I slept in isolated streets and getting food was hard with my small amount of money and supplies, since I didn't have a job yet.
Finding a job was hard since I only went to school for couple years, but I managed to get a char (siivoustyö) from a private and wealthy person, who agreed to give me a salary that seemed small for most people in the city but for me it was big - He also taught me what to do and how everything works.
